ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will host its annual “Dig for the Cure” night Friday against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
All fans who wear pink to Friday's contest against the Bulldogs will receive free admission while the first 250 fans will receive a breast cancer awareness bracelet. The Eagles will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit breast cancer awareness.
Friday the Eagles will be looking to snap a two-game conference skid. Winthrop is currently 7-10 on the season with a 1-2 record in the Big South.
Jennica Mullins and Stephanie Palmer continue to lead the Eagles offensively with 139 and 129 kills respectively. Mullins also added to her block total against Presbyterian last week and now has 80 total blocks which continues to lead the conference.
UNC Asheville also holds a 1-2 mark in the conference with a 5-14 record overall. The Bulldogs are coming off a win against Liberty and a loss to Radford last weekend.
The Bulldogs are led offensively by Holly Shelton who leads the team and is third in the conference with 204 kills. Asheville's primary setter is Katie Davis who has piled up 591 assists this year.
Winthrop owns a 36-22 overall series record against Asheville. The Eagles won both meetings last year with the Bulldogs' last victory coming November 5, 2010.
After Friday's contest the Eagles will also host Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Gardner-Webb is currently 2-1 in the conference with a 7-13 overall mark but will have a road match at Presbyterian on Friday before its matchup with the Eagles. Gardner-Webb picked up a victory over Radford while falling to Liberty last week.
Tyler Cockrell leads the Bulldogs offensively with 177 kills and a .284 hitting percentage. At the net she also leads the team with 60 total blocks. Heather Feldman is the squad's primary setter with 679 assists this season, ranking her third in the Big South.
The Eagles have only fallen twice all-time to Gardner-Webb, holding a 16-2 overall record. The Bulldogs defeated Winthrop on October 7 last year.
Winthrop will complete its five-match home stand next weekend with contests against High Point and Campbell.
