ROCK HILL, SC
– The Winthrop volleyball team sent its seniors out on a high note Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 3-0.

Saturday's match was the final home contest for Winthrop seniors Carolyn Weed and Kristin Cruse.

With the victory Winthrop improved its record to 12-14 overall and 6-5 in the conference.  Charleston Southern fell to 11-18 overall and 4-7 in the conference.

"That was a big win for us, especially with the way the standings are right now," head coach Julie Torbett said.  "We had two nice performances from our seniors."

Winthrop dominated the first set.  After jumping out to an early 5-1 lead, the Eagles continued to slowly increase their lead to take the first set 25-13.

The Eagles continued their dominance into the second set.  Winthrop grabbed an early 10-4 lead but the Charleston Southern was able to battle back to within 11-10, but managed only two more points as the Eagles won the second set 25-12.

Winthrop had to fight a little harder to win the third set.  Charleston Southern led early and even after the Eagles regained a lead the Buccaneers stayed close before the Eagles were able to take the third set 25-19.

Jennica Mullins led the Eagles with 11 kills and a .625 hitting percentage.  Stephanie Palmer recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs and also recorded eight kills.

"Jennica continues to be a dominant force at the net for us,"  Torbett said.  "We also had a good service game today with five aces that kept them out of their system."

Winthrop will head out on the road to complete the conference season starting next weekend at Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.
