Eagle Volleyball Falls 3-0 in Non-Conference Contest to Furman Tuesday

– The Winthrop volleyball team fell in a non-conference match Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 decision at home to the Furman Paladins.

Winthrop fell to 10-12 overall while Furman improved to 19-6.

Furman led throughout the first set, but the Eagles were able to hold strong.  Winthrop trailed by only one at 19-18 but the Paladins were able to close the first set on a 6-1 run to win 25-19.

The Paladins jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead to start the second set and while the Eagles stayed close, were unable to mount a comeback.  Furman took the second set 25-19.

Winthrop was again right in the mix early in the third set, trailing by only one at 11-10 before Furman went on a 6-1 run to open a 17-11 lead.  This took some energy out of the Eagles as Furman was able to roll to a 25-16 victory to win the match 3-0.

The Eagles were led by freshman Rachel Lenz who finished with nine kills.  Stephanie Palmer had 21 assists while Kristin Cruse finished with 14 digs.

The Eagles will stay at home for their next match on Friday against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
