ROCK HILL, SC
Krystyna Freda and Grace Radler combine on a couple of goals as Winthrop clinched the fourth seed in the Big South Conference tournament, Tuesday night at Eagle Field, with a 5-0 win against Gardner-Webb.

The Lady Eagles improve to 10-6-2 overall and 7-2-2 in Big South Conference play.  The Runnin' Bulldogs wrapped up their season with a 3-14-1 record and a 2-8-1 mark in conference action.

As a result of the win over Gardner-Webb and a Coastal Carolina 2-1 loss at Charleston Southern earlier in the afternoon, the Lady Eagles clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming Big South Conference tournament and will host Coastal Carolina on Saturday October 27.

“We started the game really strong, created some chances and finished well.  It was nice to go out and get a clean sheet,” said head coach Spencer Smith.  “It will be nice to have the opportunity to host the first round match and play in front of our home fans.”

Winthrop got a pair of goals Tuesday evening from Krystyna Freda who now has 13 goals this season giving her sole possession of first place for the league lead in goals.  Freda opened up the goal scoring in the 7th minute of play converting her shot from 10 yards out low and to the left of goal.  Her second goal of the evening came just two minutes into the second half when she ran onto a through ball from Grace Radler.  Her shot from around the penalty spot beat the diving goalkeeper to the right side.  Freda added an assist to her tally for the night when she assisted on Ariel Kunde's 36th minute goal.

With five points against Gardner-Webb, Freda's point total for the season now stands at 31 which ranks first in the Big South Conference.  Additionally, her 66 career points make her the all-time leader in points at Winthrop, surpassing Chelsea White's (2005-08) 63 career points.

Grace Radler had a pair of assists and added a goal to her season totals.  Radler dished out her first assist of the night on Lia Gorden's goal in the 15th minute of play.  Radler capped off the goal scoring effort for the Lady Eagles in the 59th minute when she converted a one-time shot from Freda's pass.  Radler now has 11 assists on the season which ranks first in the conference.

Freda led all players with seven shots, while the Runnin' Bulldogs were led by Ele Margelos with four shots from her defensive position.  Amelia Henderson split duties in net with Sarah Schippers and finished with four saves.  Schippers was not forced to make any saves in the second half as the Winthrop defense only allowed two shots and none on net.  Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Amy Schmitt finished the evening with five saves.

The Lady Eagles will return to action at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27th when they host Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament at Eagle Field.
