ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will step out of conference play on Tuesday when the Eagles host in-state opponent Furman University at 6 p.m.
Winthrop is coming off a split of conference matches this past weekend, winning a five-set thriller over Radford on Friday before falling to Liberty in three sets on Saturday.
Jennica Mullins had a career night against Radford, totaling a career-high 18 kills and tying her career high with 12 blocks. Mullins' 12 blocks against the Highlanders tied the Winthrop school record for blocks in five-set match. Freshman Rachel Lenz also recorded a career-high in kills Friday night, finishing with 17.
Furman is coming off a 3-1 loss at Elon on Saturday but previously had won six in a row, dating back to the beginning of October. The Paladins are 18-6 overall on the season and 7-3 in the Southern Conference.
The Paladins have been led offensively by Chandler Ambrester and Natalie Braun who have totaled 315 and 295 kills respectively this season. Jo Wilks is the team's sole setter with 1036 assists this season. Elle Ross leads Furman with 334 digs while Caroline Adams leads Furman defensively at the net with 75 blocks.
After Tuesday the Eagles will remain at home for a weekend conference double header. Winthrop will host Coastal Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Charleston Southern Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday's contest will be senior day for seniors Carolyn Weed and Kristin Cruse.
