LYNCHBURG, VA – The Winthrop volleyball team struggled defensively Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 on the road to the Liberty Flames.
The Eagles fell to 11-12 overall and 5-4 in the Big South with the loss while Liberty improved to 17-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference with the victory.
Winthrop fell behind early in the first set and couldn't recover as the Flames took the opener 25-20.
The majority of the second set was a close affair before Liberty was able to put it away late. The two teams were tied 19-19 before the Flames closed the second set on a 6-1 run to win 25-20.
The third set was almost a copy of the second as Winthrop kept the set close before Liberty was able to pull away late and win the final set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Amy Zimmer led the Eagles with 11 kills while Stephanie Palmer added 10 and led the team with 21 assists. Kristin Cruse finished with nine digs and Jennica Mullins had four total blocks.
The Eagles will return to the Winthrop Coliseum on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a non-conference contest against the Furman Paladins.
