ROCK HILL, SC
Stephanie Palmer recorded her league-leading sixth triple-double of the season Saturday as the Winthrop volleyball team downed the Campbell Camels 3-1.

Winthrop improved to 10-11 overall and 4-3 in the Big South with the victory while Campbell fell to 7-17 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

“It was nice to finally put back-to-back conference wins together today,” head coach Julie Torbett said.  “It's exciting to have a winning conference record.”

After a back-and-forth opening to the first set, Campbell was able to edge an 18-16 lead over the Eagles, forcing Winthrop to take a timeout. Out of the break, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to win the first set 25-18.

Winthrop dominated the second set from the start, grabbing the first seven points en route to taking the set 25-18.

After leading early in the third set, the Eagles struggled to close out the Camels.  Winthrop led 13-12 but Campbell went on a 13-5 run to finish the fourth set, winning 25-18.

The Eagles didn't allow any possibility of a fifth set as Winthrop controlled the fourth set and won 25-15, taking the match 3-1.

Palmer's sixth triple-double consisted of 10 kills, 32 assists and 10 digs.  Carolyn Weed had a solid afternoon, totaling 10 kills and eight total blocks.  Rachel Lenz also added 11 kills.  Kristin Cruse and Catherine Brusie finished with 24 and 22 digs respectively.

“This was a different match from yesterday,” Torbett said.  “Today we had to rely more on our outside hitters instead of the middles yet Carolyn Weed was still able to have a solid effort and really helped us in key times.”

Winthrop will head out on the road for the first time in three weeks when the Eagles travel to Radford on Friday, October 19 for a 7 p.m. contest against the Highlanders.
