ROCK HILL, SC—After a disappointing loss in the conference opener on Saturday at Coastal Carolina, the Winthrop women's basketball looks to bounce back Monday night as it visits Charleston Southern. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Winthrop (6-7, 0-1 Big South) is coming off one of its worst offensive performances of the season after blowing a 16-point lead at Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Lady Eagles, who had scored 88 points against Mercer on the road on Dec. 28, had been averaging 74.2 points in road games. In fact, three of the four 80-point games this season by Winthrop have been on the road.

Monday night's game should provide plenty of points as Charleston Southern ranks first in the Big South in points per game at 75.6 and Winthrop is second at 70.0 ppg. Winthrop is opening up with its first two conference games on the road for the first time since the 1998-99 season. That year the Lady Eagles were on the road for their first three conference games.

Dequesha McClanahan is still the top scorer on the team at 18.8 points per game while she's shooting 36 percent from the floor on the year and is also dishing out 6.4 assists. She had a season-low one assist on Saturday at Coastal. Diana Choibekova is still second on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game, despite not scoring against Coastal. She's averaging 3.7 three-pointers per game through 13 games this season, which is best in the Big South. She entered the week ranked first in the country averaging 4.1 threes per game.

Samiya Wright is third in scoring at 12.6 points per game and is shooting 47 percent from the floor, 51 percent from three and 87 percent from the free throw line. Wright is also becoming one of the team's top rebounders at 4.2 per game. She's averaged 5.8 rebounds in the last five games.

Senior TaQuoia Hammick has really started to get into a flow lately and is coming off a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds off the bench against Coastal. The 16 points tied her career-high, which she's achieved twice before. Over the last five games Hammick has averaged 9.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting an astounding 81 percent from the field. Hammick is a career 47 percent shooter from the foul line, but as gone 7-for-10 in the last five games and is shooting 69 percent on the season.

The Lady Eagles are facing a Charleston Southern team that features an explosive offense and that is coming off a 76-67 victory over Presbyterian College in its Big South opener. The Lady Bucs are ranked 27th nationally in points per game and second in three-pointers made per game at 9.8.  Charleston Southern is also extremely efficient in taking care of the basketball, ranking 31st in the country with just 14.8 turnovers per game.

Junior Lakeitha Alston is enjoying the best season of her career as she's leading the team with 16.1 points per game while shooting 59 percent from the field, which is second best in the league and 10th nationally. Alston also averages 5.5 rebounds.

Rachelle Coward, who sat out the 2010-11 season after transferring from Charlotte, has made her presence known so far this season with a scoring average of 15.4 while shooting 43 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. Junior Helen Terry is also averaging double-figures at 11.3 points per game and leads the team with 42 assists. Terry is also having another good year defensively as she has 35 steals (2.9 per game).
Charleston Southern is 8-3 overall and has won four of its last five games with the only loss coming at Florida, 83-59. The Lady Bucs are 5-1 at home this season and are averaging 81.5 points in six home games. The home game against Presbyterian College on Saturday was only the second home game since Nov. 22.

Winthrop leads the all-time series with Charleston Southern, 40-27, but the all-time series for regular season conference games is tied at 25-25. Winthrop has won eight of the last 10 meetings with Charleston Southern. The two losses came in the last two trips to the Buccaneer Fieldhouse.
