Volleyball Travels To College Of Charleston For Carolina Challenge

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will find out how it stacks up against the best teams in the state this weekend as the Eagles travel to Charleston, SC for the Carolina Challenge that includes the host College of Charleston Cougars along with South Carolina and Clemson.

Winthrop will square off against College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., and will face Clemson at 10 a.m. and South Carolina at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Coach Julie Torbett's squad will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's tourney at Kennesaw State where it lost two of three matches to drop to 4-2 on the young season and is Winthrop's best start since the 2006 season. 

College of Charleston sports a 3-3 record this season as it plays at home for the first time. The Cougars captured the Georgia State Invitational last weekend and have three players with over 50 kills this season, led by senior Sarah Havel's 59.

The Clemson Tigers enter the Carolina Challenge with a 4-3 record after starting the season 4-0. Clemson's last two losses were to Top 10 teams Florida and Southern California. Clemson is paced offensively by Sandra Adeleye who leads the team with 84 kills.

South Carolina comes into this year's edition of the Carolina Challenge with an undefeated 7-0 record. The Gamecocks captured the Temple Invitational and their own Gamecock Invitational to open up the season. USC has only dropped two sets all season as they are led by sophomore Juliette Thevenin with 96 kills and 94 digs.

Winthrop is led by senior middle hitter Becca Toor as she posted 56 kills, a .394 attacking percentage and earned a spot on the Owls Invitational All-Tournament Team. Toor also captured the Big South Player of the Week Award for the second straight week. For the season, Toor has 101 kills and a .396 attacking percentage. Defensively, freshman Catherine Brusie leads Winthrop with 105 digs on the year.
