Women’s Soccer Takes On USC Upstate And Western Carolina This Weekend

Eagles To Face Spartans And Catamounts Both For Second Time In Program History

The Winthrop women's soccer team will look to snap a three-game losing streak this weekend as it hosts the USC Upstate Spartans on Friday evening before traveling to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles enter this weekend with a 1-3 overall record, while the Spartans are 0-4-1 and the Catamounts are 2-1-1.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over USC Upstate 1-0, with the lone win coming in a 1-0 victory in Spartanburg, SC during the 2008 season. Western Carolina holds a 1-0 series lead over the Eagles after defeating them 2-0 at Cullowhee, NC in 2007.

Ariel Kunde leads the Winthrop offense this season with five points on two goals and one assist. Her goals came in losses at The Citadel and Francis Marion, and also matches her career-high for most goals in a season. Courtney Durbin, Kelly Clark and Tori Davis have scored one goal each on the season, while Grace Radler, Ashley Herndon and Rachel Webster post one assist apiece. Goalkeeper Sarah Schippers has started all four games on the season and allowed a total of six goals for a 1.50 GAA. She also has 30 saves for a save percentage of .833.

The Spartans are coached by Renee Lopez, who is in her second season with the program and holds a 3-17-3 career record with USC Upstate. The Spartans have scored just one goal on the season and came from Kayli Moore unassisted. Goalkeepers Sarah Plantz and Rachel Collins have split time in the net this season with Plantz starting in two games and Collins in three. Plantz has allowed five goals for a 1.96 GAA, and snagged 14 saves for a .737 save percentage. Collins posts a 4.47 GAA after giving up 11 goals so far in 2011, and has grabbed 18 saves for a .621 save percentage.

The Catamounts are coached by Chad Miller, who is in his second season with the program and has a 7-11-5 record at Western Carolina. The team is led offensively by Kayla Beauduy with five points on two goals and one assist. She is also tied for the team-lead with Laura Greb in shots at five each. Greb, Kimberly Sullivan, Brittany Gendron and Kayla Sedgley have one goal apiece, while Madison Lee has a team-high two assists. Goalkeeper Katie Jacobs has compiled a 0.93 GAA this season to go with her four goals allowed, and posts a .840 save percentage with 21 saves.
