Volleyball Opens Up Conference Play This Week At Home

Eagles Host Charleston Southern And Coastal Carolina At The Winthrop Coliseum

After being away from the Winthrop Coliseum for nearly a month, the Winthrop volleyball team will start their conference schedule this weekend against Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina.

The Eagles come into this weekend with a 7-5 record and two-match winning streak, while the Buccaneers come to the Winthrop Coliseum with a 3-12 record and the Chanticleers are 6-8.

Historically, Winthrop holds winning records against both schools as the Eagles are 57-15 all-time against CSU and 41-29 against Coastal Carolina. Last season, Winthrop eliminated the Chanticleers in the Big South Tournament in straight sets.

Sophomore setter Stephanie Palmer is coming off her first Big South Player of the Week Award as finished last week with two triple-doubles in three matches. Senior middle hitter Becca Toor leads the Winthrop offense with 164 kills and a .329 hitting percentage on the season. Defensively, the Eagles are paced by a pair of freshmen as libero Catherine Brusie has totaled 176 digs and outside hitter Lauren Landsman comes into Friday with 144 digs.

Charleston Southern is coached by Danyel Bellush who is in her 15th season with the Bucs. CSU's offense is led by Sydney Tracy with 121 kills on the season. On the defensive side, the Buccaneers turn to Ashley Higginbothem as she has tallied 228 digs on the year. CSU comes into Friday night's match on a two-game losing streak, as the Bucs fell to cross-town rival College of Charleston in their last match.

The Chanticleers are coached by Kristen Bauer who is in her 13th year at the program. CCU is currently on a two-match winning streak as they will take on the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Friday night. Recently, the Chanticleers took two matches at the Davidson Tournament last weekend. Coastal is paced offensively by Meghan Laffin with 148 kills on the year, as Lindsay Gill leads the defense with 179 digs.

The Eagles will be taking on Charleston Southern on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., as Coastal Carolina comes to the Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 23 for a 2 p.m. showdown.
