ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will host the South Carolina State Bulldogs in its first midweek match of the season on Wednesday evening at Eagle Field.
The Eagles lead the all-time series over the Bulldogs 6-2, but South Carolina State has won the last two meetings by a combined two goals. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting 3-0 in 2003, and last won in 2008 by a score of 3-0. The Eagles won six straight meetings over the Bulldogs to begin the series, and also held South Carolina State scoreless in five of those contests.
Winthrop enters the contest with a 3-4 record after defeating the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 2-1 in double-overtime last Friday. All three of its victories have come at home this season, where the Eagles are outscoring their opponents 11-2.
Five different Winthrop players have two goals apiece this season to lead the team offensively, while
Courtney Durbin has a team-high six points. Durbin, along with
Ariel Kunde,
Krystyna Freda,
Kelly Clark and
Tori Davis are the team-leaders in goals scored, while
Rachel Webster has dished out three assists. Goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers is coming off a performance against the Buccaneers in which she recorded a career-high 10 saves and gives her a total of 46 for the season and a .836 save percentage. She has also allowed nine goals for a 1.39 GAA.
The Bulldogs are coached by Glad Bugariu, who is in his fourth season with the program and seventh overall. He has a career record of 78-38-10 and 26-26-8 mark at South Carolina State. The Bulldogs are currently 1-4-2 so far this season and 1-3-1 on the road. Their lone win of the season came in a 3-1 victory over Alabama State on Aug. 28.
Five South Carolina State players have scored its goals this season, with each tallying one goal. Kaitlynn Cortz has three points on the season with one goal and one assist, while Veronica Aguilar's two assists are a team-best. Goalie Danielle Murphy has given up 14 goals this season for a 2.15 GAA to go with her 32 saves and .696 save percentage.
