Women’s Soccer Hits The Road For Third Straight Match On Sunday Afternoon

Eagles Will Travel To Face Francis Marion At 4 p.m.

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer will remain on the road for the third straight game as it travels to take on the Francis Marion Patriots at 4 p.m.

The Eagles enter the contest 1-2 on the season with both losses coming on the road, while the Patriots post a 1-3-1 overall record and 1-1 at home. The lone win for Winthrop came in its season opener against the Georgia Southern Eagles 3-1, and Francis Marion defeated Big South member High Point in Florence 2-1. The Eagles will look to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping 2-1 decision at The Citadel and 1-0 against the College of Charleston.

Winthrop is led offensively by junior Ariel Kunde with three points on one goal and one assist this season. Kunde is joined with one goal each by senior Courtney Durbin, redshirt freshman Kelly Clark and freshman Tori Davis. Kunde, senior Rachel Webster and freshman Ashley Herndon have dished out one assist apiece so far in 2011. Freshman Krystyna Freda leads the Eagles and is second in the conference with 12 shot attempts, and is the only player on the team with double-digit shots. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Schippers has allowed just four goals on the year for a 1.33 GAA, and has grabbed 21 saves for a .840 save percentage. She leads the Big South in saves, and is second in save percentage and goals against average.

The Patriots are led by third-year head coach Joel Person, who currently holds a 7-28-4 overall record at the helm of the Francis Marion program. Elizabeth Asare leads the Patriots with four points on two goals this season, and is tied for the team lead with Yasmin Bunter with eight total shots. Bunter, along with Sandy Odembo and Chanel Harris, has one assist each to lead Francis Marion. Goalkeeper Lauren Vetock has given up nine goals this season for a 1.72 GAA in five games played. She has snagged 28 saves for a save percentage of .757.

The all-time series between Winthrop and the Patriots is tied 1-1-1, with Francis Marion holding a 1-0 advantage when playing in Florence, SC. The Patriots defeated the Eagles 1-0 in Florence during the 2008 season, but Winthrop won the last meeting in 2009 between the two teams 2-0. The first meeting in 2007 ended in a 1-1 tie.
