ROCK HILL, SC—The men's soccer team wraps up a four-game road swing that will finish off this Sunday in Huntington, WV as the Eagles will take on Marshall at 1 p.m.
Winthrop enters the game on a three-game losing streak and is 3-3 on the year while Marshall is 2-4 and coming off a 3-1 victory on Friday at home against Oakland.
The Eagles' offense got off to a fast start this season scoring 10 goals in the first three games. However, the Eagles have since managed just one goal in the next three and haven't scored in the last 227 minutes and 38 seconds of action. Winthrop's leading scorer
Alex Mantchev, returns after having been suspended for one game for violating team rules. Winthrop hopes his return might bring back some spark that was missing in Wednesday's loss at Davidson.
On the flip side, Winthrop has allowed too many goals as opponents have eight in the last three games.
The last time these two teams met was toward the end of the 2010 season at Eagle Field and Marshall squeaked out a 3-2 victory in double-overtime off the head of Carl Munday. Winthrop led 2-0 and looked to be in control, but gave up two goals within two minutes of each other with less than 15 to play and eventually lost in overtime.
Freshman
Akeem Matthews is tied for the team lead in goals with three, but is without a point in the last four games. The Eagles have been forced to shuffle the line-ups with injuries, etc. but hope that the team is finally healthy and ready to get back on track at Marshall Sunday afternoon.
The Thundering Herd return four of the top seven scorers from a season ago in which the team reached nine wins. Scoring goals for Marshall has been a problem this season having scored just one goal, which came last Sunday in an impressive 1-0 road win at Michigan State. The team had been shutout in the previous four matches. Defensively Marshall hasn't exactly given up a lot of goals having lost three of the first four games by the score of 1-0. The other was a 2-0 loss against East Tennessee State. The offense has now produced four goals in the last two games (both wins).
The last time Winthrop visited Marshall was in 2000 as the Eagles lost 4-0.
