ROCK HILL, SC - After falling in a mid-week showdown against Charlotte on Wednesday, the Winthrop volleyball team looks to get back on track this weekend at the Elon Phoenix Classic beginning on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:30.
The Eagles head into the tournament with an even 5-5 record on the season, and will face North Carolina Central on Friday, then follow that up with a match on Saturday, Sept. 17 against host Elon.
Winthrop has dropped its last three matches, including a 3-2 defeat at Charlotte this past Wednesday. The Eagles will be taking on North Carolina Central in their first match on the opening day of the tournament. NCCU is looking for its first win on the season as Dayanna Arrufat paces Central for 69 kills this year. NCCU is coached by Georgette Crawford-Crooks and she is in her sixth year at the program.
Host Elon comes into its own tournament with a 9-3 record. The Phoenix are currently on a three-match winning streak as they are led offensively by Caroline Lemke with 115 kills on the year. Defensively, Elon's Ali Deatsch leads the Phoenix with 195 digs. Elon is coached Mary Tendler as she is in eighth season.
Winthrop is still led offensively by senior middle hitter Becca Toor with 138 kills and a .317 attacking percentage this year. Coming off a triple-double performance against the 49ers, sophomore setter Stephanie Palmer will try to match that performance this weekend as she leads the Eagles in assists with 378.
This will be the final regular season tournament for Winthrop as it will open Big South Conference play next weekend against Charleston Southern (Sept. 23) and Coastal Carolina (Sept. 24).
