ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will travel up I-77 on Wednesday evening to take on the Charlotte 49ers at 7 p.m.
The Eagles enter the mid-week match at 5-4 on the season with half those loses coming last weekend at the Carolina Challenge. Winthrop was able to capture one win as the Eagles brought down the host, College of Charleston in five sets. The following day, the Eagles fell to Clemson in four sets and a one-loss South Carolina squad in three sets. Winthrop will look to snap its two-game losing streak against the 49ers.
Leading the way for the Eagles this season on the offensive side is Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year,
Becca Toor. Toor's 132 kills on the season not only leads the team, but leads the conference. As a team, Winthrop has the top in conference in total kills with 456. Defensively, the Eagles are first in the Big South with total blocks and digs with 90 and 604 respectively. Leading the way in digs is freshman libero
Catherine Brusie with 137.
The Eagles will be without their blocks leader in freshman middle blocker
Jennica Mullins. Mullins suffered a stress fracture in her foot last weekend at the Carolina Challenge and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Jennica led the team with 45 blocks this season.
Charlotte is under the direction of Chris Redding who is in his fifth season with the 49ers. Redding currently has a 63-66 record at Charlotte. Bianca Rouse leads the 49ers with 121 kills on the season, as Christina Drake leads the defense with 110 digs for Charlotte. Savannah Gaster controls the net as she has totaled 31 total blocks on the season. The 49ers are coming off a loss against Furman in the finale of the Hilton University 49er Invitational.
Historically, the boarder war is currently in the favor of the 49ers as they lead the series with 26 wins, compared to Winthrop's 14. The last time these teams met was in 2008 when the Eagles took that match in straight sets at the Winthrop Coliseum.
