Winthrop opened its 2011 season with a 3-1 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles in Rock Hill, and The Citadel fell 1-0 to the Clemson Tigers. The season-opening victory for the Eagles was their first since the 2008 season.

The Eagles are currently in their second season under head coach Spencer Smith, who holds an 8-10-2 record with the program.

The Bulldogs are coached back-to-back SoCon Coach of the Year Bob Winch. He is in his seventh season at The Citadel, and holds a 24-68-6 record with the program and 136-168-21 overall mark in 19 seasons. The Bulldogs went 12-8-1 last season and finished third in the Southern Conference at 7-4.

The Citadel is led offensively by Mariana Garcia with three shots, while goalkeeper Laura Serafino has tallied five saves this season.

The all-time series between Winthrop and the Bulldogs is tied 1-1 with the last meeting taking place during the 2004 season, a 4-2 win for Winthrop in Charleston. The Citadel won the first-ever meeting in 2003 over the Eagles 3-2.

Winthrop will continue its stretch of Southern Conference opponents to open the 2011 season on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 12 p.m. against the College of Charleston Cougars. The contest will be played at Patriots Point in Charleston.
