ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop women's basketball dropped its second straight game with a 57-45 loss to High Point, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles fall to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in the Big South while High Point evens its record at 13-13 overall and is now 7-6 in the league.
The Lady Eagles trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, but fought back to within eight points when Lacey Lyons drilled a three-pointer from the corner with 4:23 left. Defensively Winthrop held the Panthers on the other end as Winthrop forced a tie-up with five seconds on the shot clock. High Point was forced to inbound the ball at the baseline and take a quick shot. The pass came outside the three-point line to Mackenzie Maier and she attempted a three, but Ashley Cox was whistled for a foul trying to block the shot with two seconds left on the shot clock. Maier drained all three free throws for an 11-point lead again and Winthrop never recovered.
Lyons three was the only field goal Winthrop had over the final five minutes.
High Point led 29-22 at the half, thanks to a 13-0 run midway through the half that put them in front 20-12 with 6:01 remaining. Erin Reynolds provided five points during the run, including a triple that put High Point in front for good and a couple of short baskets by Cheyenne Parker.
Winthrop held High Point to just 35 percent shooting in the game, but the Panthers were tough at the foul line (14-for-20) and defensively forcing 20 turnovers and recording 13 blocks. Maier finished with eight blocks while Parker had four. Maier also finished with 10 points, four assists and four steals.
Winthrop shot 30 percent for the game and won the battle of the boards 46-38, but couldn't take advantage of second chances.
Shamia Brown led all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting and she also had three assists. Amy Dodd pitched in with 10 points and six boards.
Winthrop celebrated senior night as Ashley Cox, Chantel Johnson and Lyons were recognized before the game. Cox finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Johnson had two points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Lyons had nine points and five rebounds. TaQuoia Hammick struggled from the field going 4-for-13, but finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Winthrop will wrap up its home schedule on Monday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. as it hosts UNC Asheville. High Point will head to Conway, SC to take on Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. on Monday.
