DAVIDSON, NC— Winthrop couldn't overcome a 15-3 second half run by Davidson in an 80-65 loss on the road, Thursday night in non-conference action.
Winthrop trailed 44-39 after
Dequesha McClanahan knocked down two free throws with 13:56 remaining in the game. Davidson's Shneeka Center answered with a three from the win for an eight point lead and sparked a run that put the Wildcats ahead 58-42 with 10:42 left.
The Lady Eagles tried to fight back, but couldn't get the shots to fall as they lose their fourth straight game and fall to 2-5 on the year. Davidson improves to 3-4 on the year.
The second half started off well for Winthrop as
Taylor Calvert finished a fast break basket off a nice feed from McClanahan to make it just a one-possession game. Kristen Johnsen came right back with a jumper inside. The teams traded baskets over the next three to four minutes before Davidson went on its run that opened the game. The deficit did reach 21 points with 9:28 left after Katrin Chiemeka hit a three, but the Lady Eagles battled back to cut the lead to 10 points with 51 seconds left.
Davidson shot the ball well from the field in the first half at 47 percent and bettered that in the second half at 52 percent while Winthrop shot 29 percent in the first half and finished the game at 33 percent.
The game started off with a quick bucket off the jump ball for Davidson as the ball was tipped ahead to Laura Murray for the easy lay-in, but Winthrop responded with a 10-0 run. The run started on a McClanahan three-pointer followed by a basket in the lane from Choibekova, who then knocked down a three after she kept the play alive after an offensive rebound.
Samiya Wright made it 10-2 after McClanahan found her for an easy two underneath the hoop.
The Wildcats were able to bounce right back as Winthrop missed its next six shots and committed four turnovers before
Katie Fitzgerald scored on a lay-up on a nice feed from Wright. That cut the lead to 14-12 with 11:50 remaining.
McClanahan made a jumper in the lane with 9:37 left to make it a five point game, but Lillian McCabe came right back with a three to push the lead to 24-16. On the Eagles next possession, Choibekova was fouled while shooting a three and knocked down all three free throws and the lead was back to five for Davidson.
Taylor Calvert forced a turnover on the Wildcats ensuing possession and that led to a Wright jumper as she made the shot and was fouled in the act. Wright converted the three-point play and the lead was down to two points.
There were only two baskets combined over the final six minutes of the half as a lay-up by Barbara Sitton gave Davidson a 33-25 lead with 2:38 and Winthrop answered right back with a Choibekova triple, making it a 33-28 game at the half.
McClanahan led all scorers with 21 points as she also had four assists and two steals. Wright finished with a career-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting while Choibekova added 14 points.
Davidson had a balanced attack and received a huge contribution from its bench as it finished with 42 of the 80 points. Center came off the bench to lead the team with 14 points. Jasmine Calin and Amanda Ottaway each came off the bench as well and finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Winthrop will be off the next eight days before its back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Winthrop Coliseum at 7 p.m. against South Carolina State.
