ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop allowed three goals in less than a 17-minute span as it fell 3-1 to Radford on “Senior Day”, Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
The first half was entertaining with both teams getting chances going forward and working hard. The first break of the match went to Radford as a ball popped out of two players in on a tackle and right to Luis Grande. The ball redirected toward goal and Grande was right there to run on to the ball as he took a couple of touches and then slotted the ball into the back of the net just before halftime.
Radford (9-8-1, 4-4-1 Big South) carried momentum from the end of the half into the second half and were all over the Eagles early, but Winthrop keeper Enrique Miranda kept the team in it until one slipped by him in the 56th minute. Carter Mills got free down the right side and held off a Winthrop defender and had just enough room to get a cross off into the 18-yard box. The cross was behind one player running on, but Grande was trailing the play and collected the service at the top of the box with nobody around him. Grande took a couple of touches and then bent a shot around a couple of players and past Miranda into the right side of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders added another five minutes later when Iyiola Awosika scored his ninth goal of the year. Bernardo Ulmo drove a ball up field to Awosika as he broke free headed toward goal. Awosika calmly ripped a shot into the far left corner as he dribbled toward goal to Miranda's left.
Adam Brundle spoiled the shutout opportunity with a goal in the 88th minute as he took a chip pass over the defense from Josh Goldstein, flicked the ball over the head of the keeper and defender and ran onto the ball heading it into the open goal for his third of the year.
Miranda finished with five saves as did Radford's Ryan Taylor. Both teams finished with 14 shots a piece.
Prior to the match, Winthrop recognized seniors Matt Horn, Andres Pullin and Goldstein for their hard work and dedication to the Winthrop soccer program and athletic department.
The Eagles will play again next Thursday in the Big South Conference Tournament at a time to be announced later by the Big South Conference office.
