ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop's Lady Eagle golf team could not overcome first round leader Gardner-Webb in the 2011 Winthrop Intercollegiate and finished second in the eight-team tournament which concluded on Sunday at the Rock Hill Country Club.
Winthrop opened the day one shot behind GWU, but lost four shots to the leaders and finished at 620 (308-312) in the 36-hole event, five shots behind the Bulldogs. Two Winthrop freshmen led Winthrop in both rounds. Both
Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA) and
Viivi Nuorti (Helsinki, Finland) shot rounds of 77 on Sunday to go along with their opening rounds of 75 and tied for fourth in medalist competition with 152 to earn their first collegiate Top 10 tournament finish. The tournament medalist was Lauren Smith of Appalachian State who finished at 5-over par 149 (71-78). a pair of Garder-Webb players, Meghan Allum and Sammy Vass, tied for second place with 150 scores.
Finishing third for the Lady Eagles was senior
Kayla Cline (Socorro, NM) who turned in a 157 (78-79) which tied her for 11th place. Senior
Katie Bolling (New Brighton, MN) tied for 15th at 159 (80-79) while sophomore
Allison Lee (Salisbury, NC) was a shot back at 160 (81-79) and tied for 17th place.
Winthrop's low score on Sunday came from sophomore Nicole Moobery (Norfolk, NE) who was entered as an individual. She shot 74 and tied for 26th in medal play at 163 (89-74). Freshman
Rachel Wyatt (Blythewood, SC) also played as an individual for Winthrop and tied for 29th at 166 (85-81).
The remaining team standings were as follows: 3. Presbyterian College, 621 (311-310); 4. Appalachian State, 623 (313-310); 5. Bethune-Cookman, 652 (330-322); 6. USC Upstate, 654 (337-317); 7. St. Francis (PA), 666 (345-321); 8. The Citadel, 672 (332-340).
The Lady Eagles will return to action next weekend when they travel to Murfreesboro, TN to participate in the Blue Raider Invitational which is being hosted by Middle Tennessee.
