ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will remain in conference play this week with two home games against the High Point Panthers and Liberty Flames at Eagle Field.
The Eagles enter the two-game stretch with a 5-5 overall record and 1-1 mark in the conference, while the Panthers are 4-7-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Flames hold a 5-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big South.
Winthrop is coming off a conference-opening week in which it defeated Gardner-Webb 7-2, but fell in its Big South home opener to Campbell 4-1. The defeat to the Camels was the first at home this season for the Eagles.
Krystyna Freda remains the team-leader for Winthrop in goals scored with seven and shots at 52, while
Courtney Durbin leads the team with 15 points on five goals and five assists. Freda also has three-game winning goals this year, while
Tori Davis is second with two. Goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers has given up 17 goals in 2011 for a 1.83 GAA, and snagged 52 saves for a .754 save percentage.
High Point is led offensively by Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year Kelli Joline with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Joline leads the team in goals and is tied for first in assists, while Brooke Lisson has a team-high two game-winning goals. Jacky Kessler, Katie Harris and Danniel Rosado also have two assists each. Goalkeeper Andrea Ritchie has two shutouts this season, to go with her 17 goals allowed, 1.59 GAA, 41 saves and .707 save percentage.
The Panthers are coached by Marty Beall, who is in his third season with the program and is 22-33-4. He holds a career record of 78-77-11 in nine years.
High Point leads the all-time series with the Eagles 5-2-3 with three of the last four matches ending in a draw. The Panthers also lead 2-1-1 in games played at Eagle Field. The two teams tied 0-0 in the last game played in Rock Hill. High Point won the first meeting all-time 7-3 in 2003 and the last 1-0 during the 2010 Big South Tournament at Radford.
Liberty's offensive is led by Silvia Betancourt with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She also has a team-high two game-winning goals on the season. Lauren Stell's three assists are the most on the team, while goalie Karen Blocker has a GAA of 1.53 on 16 goals allowed and .754 save percentage with 49 saves. Blocker also has two shutouts in 2011.
The Flames are coached by Jessica Hain, who is in her fourth season with the program. She holds a career record of 25-32-10 overall and with the program.
Winthrop leads the all-time series over Liberty 5-2-3, but has not won a meeting in the series since a 3-2 overtime victory during the 2007 Big South Tournament. The Eagles lost 1-0 in overtime last season at Lynchburg, while the Flames hold a 2-1-1 advantage in Rock Hill. Winthrop won the first meeting all-time in the series 2-1 in double-overtime during 2003, and the last five meetings between the two teams have either gone into overtime or double-overtime.
