ROCK HILL, SC – The regular season portion of the 2011 Winthrop women's soccer schedule will come to an end this weekend as the Eagles hit the road for the final two contests at Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern.
The Eagles enter the final week of the season with a 10-6 overall record and 6-2 mark in the Big South, and have won eight out of their last 10 games. The Chanticleers are currently 2-13-2 on the season and 2-5-1 in the conference, with both of their conference wins coming against VMI and UNC Asheville. The Buccaneers hold a 8-7-1 record overall and are 3-3-1 in the conference.
The Winthrop offense is led by the duo of
Krystyna Freda and
Courtney Durbin, who each have a team-high 25 points on the season. Freda leads the team with 11 goals and six game-winning goals, while Durbin has a team-best five assists. Freda tops the conference in goals, points and game-winning goals, and Durbin is also first in points, tied for second in goals and tied for third in assists. Goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers has allowed 22 goals in her 15 starts this season for a 1.52 GAA to go with her 78 saves and .780 save percentage. She ranks fourth in the conference for goals against average, third in save percentage and fifth in saves.
Coastal Carolina is coached by Paul Hogan, who is in his first season as head coach after spending the last 10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at the University of Colorado. Hogan has also spent four years as Head Coach at Allegheny College where he went 35-17-7. He holds a career coaching record of 37-30-9.
The Chanticleers are led offensively by Morgan Thomas with five points, and joins Christina Stern and Kacey Kelley with a team-high two goals each. Alyssa Clark tops the team with two assists. Goalie Saundra Baron has allowed 31 goals in 15 games with 14 starts this season for a 2.07 GAA, and grabbed 53 saves for a .631 save percentage.
Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series over the Eagles 6-3, but the series is tied 2-2 when playing in Conway, SC. Winthrop and the Chanticleers both finished tied for the Big South Regular Season title last season as Coastal Carolina defeated the Eagles 1-0 at Eagle Field in the regular season finale. The last time Winthrop has won a game in this season came in 2008 with a 1-0 victory. The last four meetings between the two teams have ended in 1-0 scores.
Charleston Southern is coached by Eric Terrill, who is in his 17
th season with the program and 21
st season overall. He holds a 134-155-27 career coaching record and 125-149-17 mark with the Buccaneers.
Tony Lashley leads the Charleston Southern offense with seven goals and 14 points on the season, while Morgann Wood has dished out a team-high three assists. The goalkeeper duties for the Buccaneers have been split this season by Caitlin Cody and Amy Arroyo. Both Cody and Arroyo have started in eight games each this season, but Cody has allowed just five goals for a 0.60 GAA and snagged 46 saves for a .902 save percentage. Arroyo has given up 16 goals on the season for a 2.00 GAA to go with her 33 saves and .673 save percentage.
The all-time series between the Eagles and Charleston Southern is tied 3-3-3, and 1-1-2 in games played in N. Charleston, SC. Winthrop walked away with a 1-0 victory last season in Rock Hill, with the Eagles last win on the road in the series came in 2006 with a 4-1 score.
