ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop volleyball team got back on a winning track as the Eagles took down Radford in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The win brings the Eagles to 14-7 on the season and 7-2 in the Big South as Radford falls to 11-13 on the year and 5-4 in the conference.

Senior middle hitter Becca Toor paced the Eagles offense as she finished with 15 kills and a .314 hitting percentage. Following Toor was junior outside hitter Carolyn Weed who found the floor with 11 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Junior defensive specialist Kristin Cruse led the defense with 13 digs as freshman libero Catherine Brusie finished with 12. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Landsman tallied 10 digs and sophomore setter Stephanie Palmer added 10. Palmer also dished out 35 assists.

“Radford has been playing well as of late,” head coach Julie Torbett said. “It's nice to win in three.”

Radford was the first to make a run in the first set, taking its biggest lead at the 17-13 mark. The Eagles charged back into the set and tied it, 18-18. Winthrop's offense started to open up as Toor notched six kills for the set, including three-in-a-row to close out the set, 25-22. Defensively, Landsman finished the set with six digs and Palmer tallied two block solos.

The Eagles took control in the second set, taking a convincing lead at the 22-15 mark. The Highlanders regrouped and start to rally, making the score 22-20 late in the set, but three kills from Weed closed out the set, 25-21. Weed finished the set with four kills and Cruse paced the defense with four digs.

“We got a lot of points in transition,” Torbett said. “It was just a great overall match for us.”

Winthrop jumped out quickly in the third set, taking a 13-4 lead. The Eagles continued their lead throughout the set, despite a late run by the Highlanders, and took the set and the match, 25-21.

“We got two big matches this weekend,” Torbett said. “We have to finish strong before the conference tournament.”

Winthrop will be back on the floor on Friday, Oct. 28 as the Eagles travel to Conway, SC to take on Coastal Carolina. That match is slated for 7 p.m.
