Women’s Soccer Hits The Road For Two Games This Week At VMI And Radford

Eagles Have Won Six Out Of Last Eight Games

The Winthrop women's soccer team will travel this week to face the VMI Keydets (Oct. 13) and Radford Highlanders (Oct. 15) in back-to-back Big South road contests.

The Eagles enter the week having won six of their last eight games, and currently hold a 7-5 overall record and 3-1 mark in the conference. The Keydets hold a 3-7-2 record on the season and 0-3-1 record in conference play.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over VMI 5-4-1 and is unbeaten in the last three meetings. The Eagles have won the last two meetings in the series, which came last season as Winthrop picked up a 2-0 win in Rock Hill and 3-1 in the Big South Conference Tournament. The series is tied 2-2 in games played in Lexington, VA, with both of the Eagles wins coming in 2004 and 2006.

Courtney Durbin and Krystyna Freda lead the Winthrop offense with eight goals each on the season, but Durbin has a team-high 21 points by adding a team-best five assists. Goalkeeper Sarah Schippers has allowed 19 goals in net this season for a 1.67 GAA, while grabbing 65 saves for a save percentage of .774.

The Keydets are coach by Bryan Williams, who is in his seventh season with VMI and 13th year overall coaching. He currently holds a 70-158-18 career coaching record and 40-80-9 mark during his tenure with the Keydets.

VMI is led offensively by Simone Jimenez and Sarah Strand with five goals each on the season, while Jimenez' three assists are tops on the team to go with her team-high 13 points. Goalie Amanda Berrios has started in all 12 games so far this season and has given up 24 goals on the year with a 1.98 GAA. Her 75 saves are good for a .758 save percentage.

Radford enters this weekend's contest with a 9-3 overall record and 4-0 Big South record, and face Gardner-Webb on Thursday evening. The Highlanders are coached by Ben Sohrabi, who is in his 18th season overall and 16th with the program. He currently holds a 174-140-29 career mark and 155-124-26 record with Radford.

The Highlanders offense is led by Julie Ruh'e with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Che' Brown has appeared in seven games with six starts, and has tallied five shutouts. Brown has given up only one goal in her seven appearances for a 0.16 GAA, and her 19 saves are good for a .950 save percentage.

The all-time series with Radford is tied 4-4 and 2-2 in games played at Radford. The Eagles won the first-ever meeting in the series 5-3 at Radford in 2003. Winthrop defeated the Highlanders 1-0 last season in Rock Hill on an Ann Lutzenkirchen rebound goal.
