Women’s Soccer Travels To SC State Wednesday For Final Non-Conference Match

Eagles Will Open Conference Play Saturday Night

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will travel to face the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Wednesday evening in its final non-conference match of the season.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will be played at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

This will be the first game for the Eagles since their 2-0 defeat to the Davidson Wildcats on Sept. 19.

Winthrop is looking for its first win after starting the season with an 0-6-1 record. Senior Tricia Vensel still holds the team lead in goals (2), points (6), shots (21) and shots on-goal (9). She is also one of four players to start and play in seven games this season. Juniors Rachel Webster and Tiana Tallant, and sophomore Allie VandeWater are the other three Eagle players to start and play in every contest.

VandeWater posts a team-high three assists on the season, while sophomore goalie Sarah Schippers has allowed five goals and snagged 15 saves. In her last start, Schippers grabbed a career-high eight saves in a 1-0 double-overtime loss at home to the Georgia State Panthers. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil also has 17 saves on the season.

The Bulldogs have a 5-4-1 so far in 2010, most recently recording a 3-1 victory over Big South member UNC Asheville. South Carolina State has also records wins over Navy, Southern Virginia, Lipscomb and Alabama State. Briana Lopez leads the team with five goals, 12 points, 33 shots and 22 attempts on-net. Brooke Ehinger and Stephanie Searle are tied in the assists category with three apiece. Goalkeepers Mariah Hebbe and Danielle Murphy each have allowed seven goals on the season, while Hebbe has 19 saves and Murphy has 15.

Winthrop will kick off Big South play on Saturday, Oct. 2 as it will host the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in a 7 p.m. matchup at Eagle Field.
