ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop is one of five Big South Conference schools to have more than half of its student-athletes achieve better than a 3.0 grade point average for the 2009-10 academic year, according to the league office which announced the recipients of the annual Presidential Honor Roll list on Monday.
Winthrop was fourth out of the 10 member schools as 53.4 percent (140) of its 262 student-athletes received recognition for their achievements in the classroom. As a league, 1,394 out of 3,043 student-athletes – 45.8 percent—received the distinction. The 45.8 percentage marks the highest percentage since 2003 and is the sixth-straight year above the 40 percent threshold.
Radford led all Big South institutions, placing 58.3 percent of its 242 student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll. High Point was second with 57.4 percent of its 202 student-athletes on the list, while UNC Asheville placed third with 55.6 percent of its 169 student-athletes among the honorees. Following Winthrop was Presbyterian College with 51.3 percent of its 306 student-athletes making better than a 3.0 GPA.
“The Big South Conference has always taken a lot of pride in the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes,” said Kyle Kallander, commissioner of the Big South Conference. “To have nearly half of all student-athletes make the Presidential Honor Roll for the sixth consecutive year is a reflection of the outstanding individuals in the Conference and their priorities. We are all extremely proud of the achievements of these fine young men and women.”
Winthrop Athletic Director Tom Hickman was equally proud of Winthrop's success. “To have over half of our student-athletes achieve such high marks in the classroom certainly speaks highly of the efforts they make to excel in both athletics and academics. We also have a strong academic support staff in place as well as coaches who place high importance on the academic success of their athletes.”
