RADFORD, VA— The Winthrop women’s tennis team was awarded 10 Big South honors at the conference awards ceremony in Radford, VA.
Yasmine Alkema was named the Big South Co-Freshman of the Year with Gardner-Webb’s Erica White.
Alkema and Elizaveta Zaytseva were named to the All-Conference in singles as their records were 11-10 (4-3) and 7-11 (4-1), respectively. In doubles, Winthrop’s no. 1 duo Alkema and Zaytseva and no. 2 duo Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portiolli were also named to the All-Conference in doubles as their records were 8-10 (5-0) and 17-4 (7-0), respectively.
Sandra Herrera was the no. 3 singles champion for the second consecutive year. In doubles, Winthrop captured first place in all three flights with Zaytseva and Alkema at no.1, Herrera and Portiolli at no.2 and Sara Abutovic and Lisa Wilkinson at no.3.
Zaytseva was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Olga Makhova of Charleston Southern was named the Big South Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, while Buccaneers’ Mike Baker was named the Coach of the Year as Charleston Southern won the Big South regular season.
With the awards ceremony, the 2010 Big South Tennis Championship in Radford, VA, has officially started. The no. 2 seed Winthrop will play its first round of the tournament against no. 7 seed Liberty at noon on Thursday.
