CHARLOTTE, NC--
Winthrop found itself in a 24-point hole at halftime and battled back in the second period only to fall to Charlotte 68-57 in Halton Arena on Tuesday night.

The Eagles drop to 4-5 on the year while Charlotte improves to 4-5 as it now leads the brief series between the two schools 3-0.

Charlotte came out hot in the opening period as it connected on 64 percent from the field (18-28) while the Eagles had trouble finding the basket as they connected on just 28 percent (7-25).  The 49ers took a 42-18 lead at halftime, but Winthrop made it interesting in the second half.

In the first half Winthrop got outscored 27-7 over the final 12:48 after an Andre Jones 3-pointer had pulled Winthrop to within four points at 15-11.  Jamar Briscoe did most of the damage from the outside as he scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the first period and was a perfect 5 of 5 shooting, including three field goals from beyond the arc.  Phil Jones, a 6-10, 260-lb. center, came off the bench to score eight in the first period.  He was averaging 6.6 points coming into the game.

Winthrop turned the table a bit in the second half as the defense held Charlotte to just four field goals in the final 20 minutes while connecting on 14 shots.  Utilizing a trapping full-court pressure, the Eagles were able to get back into the game by forcing six turnovers and closing the gap to within six points at 58-52 with 2:45 remaining in the contest after Charles Corbin knocked down a 15-foot jumper.  Winthrop was forced to foul and the 49ers responded by connecting on 10 free throws in the final 2:08.

Reggie Middleton was the only Winthrop player to score in double figures as he finished with 14.  The 49ers placed five players in double figures.  In addition to Briscoe's 18, An'Juan Wilderness added 11 while Braswell, Derrio Green and Jones scored 10 each.

After the red-hot shooting performance in the first half, Charlotte cooled off in the second period and finished the game with 44 percent (22-50).  The 49ers were just 4 of 22 (18 pct.) in the second half.  Winthrop finished the game shooting 36 percent (21-59).  The Eagles also lost the rebound battle 39-30.  George Valentine pulled down seven boards to lead the Eagles while Charlotte was led by Braswell and Jones with eight each.

Winthrop head coach Randy Peele was visibly upset following the game and apologized to the Winthrop fans and the university in his post-game comments.

Winthrop will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 12, when it hosts Jacksonville at 3:30 in the second game of a doubleheader in the Winthrop Coliseum.  The Lady Eagles will face Southern Polytechnical at 1:00 p.m.
