LEXINGTON, KY
- Winthrop got blitzed by Kentucky's Doron Lamb who set a school record for most points in a game by a freshman, pouring in 32 as the 13th-ranked Wildcats rolled by the Eagles 89-52 on Wednesday.

Winthrop dropped its second straight game and falls to 5-7 on the season while Kentucky improves to 9-2.

The Eagles got a season-best performance by junior forward Matt Morgan who scored 18 points to go along with 7 rebounds, but Winthrop had no answer for Lamb who broke the record of 31 set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991, against Georgia. He was 11 of 12 on field goals, including 7 of 8 3-pointers. He was a perfect 5 of 5 from behind the arc in the first half as UK built a 51-32 lead.
Reggie Middleton and Charles Corbin scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Winthrop and they tied Morgan for team rebounding honors with seven.

After Winthrop had weathered the early shooting onsalught by Kentucky, the Eagles battled back to get within nine points at 41-32 in the first half with 2:38 left in the period, but UK went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game.

"This was a good game for us to play," said Winthrop head coach Randy Peele.  Winthrop is now 0-2 against the Wildcats all time.  "I thought we played hard, but against Kentucky you have to pick your poison.  I thought we did a good job in stopping the dribble drive early in the game, but they did a great job of kicking the ball to the open man and they shot the ball unbelievably well.  The only way we could win this game was to hope they (Kentucky) would not hit the threes."

As a team, Kentucky went 10 of 14 from behind the arc in the first half and finished the game with 12 of 22 (54.5 pct.).  Overall, UK connected on 52.4 pct. (33-63).  Winthrop managed to shoot just 31.9 pct. for the game (22-69).  The Eagles also got beat on the glass 43-36.  In addition to Morgan's seven boards, Corbin and Middleton also grabbed seven each.  Middleton

Brandon Knight, who scored 21 points for Kentucky, gave UK head coach John Calipari a major scare early in the first half when he collapsed to the ground in pain clutching his left knee after a collision in the lane.

Winthrop will take a few days off for the Christmas break before returning home to face Presbyterian College on Dec. 31 in a 6 p.m. New Year's Eve Big South Conference contest.
