No. 1 Women’s Soccer Faces No. 8 VMI In Big South Tournament On Thursday

Eagles Have Faced Keydets Twice In Conference Tournament

Tournament Central

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team will open its 2010 Big South Tournament play against the eighth-seeded VMI Keydets at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

It will be the second time this season that the Eagles (6-9-2, 6-2-1) and Keydets have faced each other on the field. Winthrop defeated VMI 2-0 at Eagle Field on Oct. 17, a game in which junior Courtney Durbin scored a career-high two goals and redshirt-junior goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil recorded her second shutout of the season.

Durbin enters the tournament with a team-high six goals and 14 points on the season, and is tied with senior Tricia Vensel with 17 shots on-goal. Vensel has attempted a season-high 40 shots and is also tied with sophomore Allie VandeWater with a team-leading four assists. Weavil only allowed 12 goals during the regular season for a GAA of 0.97 and has snagged 53 saves to go along with a .815 save percentage.

The Keydets (3-15-1, 2-6-1) are led offensively by Amanda Berrios with four goals, nine points, 38 shots, 14 shots on-goal and two game-winning goals on the season. Carolyn Kenaley posts a team-best two assists, while goalie Heidi Beemer has given up 20 goals during the regular season for a 1.90 GAA. She has also grabbed 73 saves for a save percentage of .785.

The Eagles and VMI have met twice in the Big South Tournament, with the Keydets owning a 1-0-1 lead. VMI, as a No. 3 seed, defeated No. 4 Winthrop 2-1 in 2008 in High Point, NC, while the eighth-ranked Eagles tied No. 5 VMI during the semifinal round in 2009 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC. Winthrop would go on to win 3-0 over the Keydets in penalty kicks.

Since the Eagles established a women's soccer program beginning with the 2003 season, Winthrop is 1-6-4 all-time in 11 games played during the Big South Tournament. The Eagles have made one championship game appearance, which came last season as they fell in penalty kicks to High Point. Their only victory in the Big South Tournament came in 2007 with a 3-2 double-overtime win against fifth-seeded Liberty. Last season, Winthrop tied the Flames, VMI and the Panthers, and won in penalty kicks against Liberty and the Keydets.
