Women’s Soccer Faces Liberty Tonight In First Conference Road Match

Eagles Look To Start Big South Season With 2-0 Record

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will travel to Lynchburg, VA this evening for its first conference road game of the season against the Liberty Flames. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The Eagles are coming off their first win of the 2010 season, a 2-1 conference-opening victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Oct. 2 at Eagle Field.

Currently on the season, Winthrop is 1-7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Flames are 3-7-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Liberty, who is coached by 2009 Big South Coach of the Year Jessica Hain, opened its Big South season with back-to-back one goal losses to Charleston Southern (3-2) on Oct. 2 and Coastal Carolina (1-0) on Oct. 4. It has captured wins over Appalachian State in the Winthrop Invitational back on Aug. 27, and against Southern Virginia and Howard.

Winthrop is led offensively by senior Tricia Vensel who has a team-high two goals, seven points, 22 shots and tied for first with 10 shots on-goal. She is also tied for the team lead, along with sophomore Allie VandeWarer, with three assists. Vensel is ranked in the top 10 for the Big South in points per game, shots and points. Her and VandeWater are also tied for first in the conference in assists and assists per game. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Schippers earned her first collegiate win against the Runnin' Bulldogs last Saturday and has allowed eight goals this season to go along with 27 saves and a save percentage of .771. She currently ranks third for the conference in goals against average, saves per game and save percentage.

Aimee Luurtsema leads the Flames with eight goals on the season and 19 points to go with her 28 total shots. She is tied for the team-lead along with Maria Owen and Maggie Woody with three assists each. Goalie Ashley Nyholt has given up 20 goals in her 12 games played this season, and is third in the Big South with 60 saves.

The Eagles lead the all-time series over Liberty 5-2-2, and hold a 3-0 record when playing on the road against the Flames. The last time the two teams faced off in Lynchburg, Winthrop came away with a 3-2 win on Oct. 13, 2007.
