ROCK HILL, SC— Just two days after ending a four-game skid with a 1-0 victory at Presbyterian College, the Winthrop men's soccer team is back in action as it travels to Spartanburg, SC to take on Wofford College Saturday evening. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Eagles had been shutout four straight games and nearly saw another zero on the board before Matt Stinson slipped one by the goalkeeper in the 88th minute for the win. It was second goal of the season for the freshman defensive midfielder.
The scoring drought for Winthrop didn't come without opportunities as it totaled 57 shots in the last five games with 18 of those on goal and a few off the crossbar and post.
Tonight the Eagles will look to string together back-to-back wins for the first time this season, as they take on a Wofford team that has misleading 1-4-1 record on the year. Wofford started the season with a 3-1 loss at Navy and a 2-0 loss at UMBC followed by back-to-back double-overtime games as it tied VCU and lost 1-0 to Coastal Carolina. After a 0-3-1 start, the Terries exploded for four goals in their first win of the season, 4-1 over USC Upstate. It's been 10 days since Wofford's last game, when it traveled to Chapel Hill, NC to take on third-ranked North Carolina. The Terriers yielded a goal with two minutes left in the game and eventually fell 2-1 in double-overtime. Three of the last four games for Wofford have gone to double OT.
Winthrop leads the all-time series 21-8-1 with the last meeting coming Sept. 1, 2006 in Boone, NC at the Broyhill Invitational at Appalachian State. That day Saidi Isaac scored two goals to lead Winthrop to a 4-0 win.
Wofford is led in scoring by senior midfielder Armin Kinigadner, who has a goal and three assists on the year. He scored his lone goal against #3 North Carolina. Senior forward Wilson Hood leads the team with two goals. Sophomore Andrew Drennan has played every second in goal this season and is currently holding a 1.39 goals against average.
Following this non-conference game, the Eagles will Big South opponents in their next three games with back-to-back home games against High Point and Virginia Military.
