Volleyball Takes Down Charleston Southern In Straight Sets

Felts Finishes Night With .579 Attacking Percentage

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team got back on the winning track as they took down the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in straight sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) Tuesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum.

With the win, the Eagles improve their record to 10-11 on the season and 7-2 in the conference as Charleston Southern falls to 9-14 on the year and 3-6 in the Big South.

Leading Winthrop was junior middle hitter Becca Toor as she paced the Eagles in kills with 14. Senior middle hitter Sara Felts was right behind her with 11 kills, but led Winthrop with a .579 hitting percentage. Senior setter Kelsey Hall and senior libeiro Kelsey Harrison both led the Eagles in digs as they both ended the night with 10. Hall also dished 37 assists.

“It was a great effort by everyone tonight,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “It was a great rebound from the loss this weekend.”

In the opening set, the teams traded points early to the 6-6 mark. Winthrop was the first to make a run and it held that lead for the entire set as the Eagles took the set 25-15. In the set, Toor was a perfect 6-for-6 on her attacks, leading the Eagles in kills with 6. Winthrop finished the set with an attacking percentage of .382.

The second set saw the Eagles jump out to a quick lead. Winthrop never gave up its lead as the Eagles took the second set 25-16. In the set, Winthrop posted 18 kills and a .410 attacking percentage.

In the final set, Winthrop made a run at the 7-7 mark and never gave up its lead. The Eagles cruised to a 25-19 set win and took the match in straight sets. Felts closed out the final set with an attacking percentage of .800 and sophomore outside hitter Carolyn Weed finished the set with four kills. Winthrop ended the final set with 19 kills.

“Our offense started going tonight,” Polhamus said. “Finishing with how many attacks we had is great.”

Charleston Southern was led offensively by senior Amanda Hill with her 11 kills on 44 attacks. Defensively, leading the Buccaneers was Tricia Rodl with 17 digs.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 22 when they travel to Radford for a Big South Showdown. That match is set for 7 p.m. The Buccaneers continue their road schedule as they travel to High Point on Friday. Game time for that match is set for 7 p.m.
