ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will travel to face the High Point Panthers in Big South Conference action on Monday evening at 7 p.m. It will be a re-match of the 2009 Big South Tournament finals in which the Panthers won 4-2 in the penalty kick round.
The Eagles (1-8-1, 1-1 BSC) will look to get back in the win column after falling in their first conference road game of the season to the Liberty Flames 1-0 in overtime. The extra period was the fifth time this season that Winthrop has played in the overtime period.
High Point holds a 4-9 overall record and 2-1 conference record after defeating the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 3-1 on Saturday night. The Panthers also picked up a 1-0 conference road win at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 2. In non-conference play, High Point has posted victories over Francis Marion and Clemson.
Senior Tricia Vensel still leads the Eagles in goals (2), points (7) and shots (25). Vensel is also tied with sophomore Allie VandeWater in assists with three, while junior Rachel Webster has a team-best in shots on-goal with 11. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Schippers leads the team in net allowing eight goals in the five games she has started and has snagged 27 saves. She has a save percentage of .771 and a GAA of 1.52.
Kelli Joline has team-highs for High Point in goals (5), points (12) and shots (27). Sara Rager leads the Panthers with four assists on the season. In the net, Andrea Ritchie has started in 12 contests and has allowed 24 goals while recorded 50 saves. She has a save percentage of .676 and a GAA of 2.18.
High Point leads the all-time series over Winthrop 2-4-2 overall and 2-1 playing in High Point, NC.
After the Monday night matchup with the Panthers, the Eagles will host back-to-back home matches against Radford (Oct. 15) and VMI (Oct. 17). The game against Highlanders will start at 7 p.m., while the Keydets contest begins at 2 p.m.
