Women’s Soccer Opens Big South Play This Weekend Against Gardner-Webb

Eagles Set For Conference Opener On Saturday

ROCK HILL, SC -- The Winthrop women's soccer team will kick off its Big South Conference season on Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. showdown against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at Eagle Field.

The Eagles are 0-7-1 on the season after wrapping up non-conference action on Wednesday night with a 2-1 overtime defeat to the South Carolina State Bulldogs.

Sophomore Allie VandeWater scored her first goal of the season against the Bulldogs, and is currently tied for second on the team in goals. She has a team-high three assists, and is second with five points. Senior Tricia Vensel holds a team-best in goals (2), points (6), shots (22) and shots on-goal (10). Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Schippers has started in four games this season and has allowed seven goals to go with 23 saves. She has posted eight saves in her last two starts, both of which are career-highs for her.

The Runnin' Bulldogs are 3-5-2 overall in 2010 after recording victories against Jacksonville State, USC Upstate and Chattanooga. They are coached by Kevin Mounce, who is in his 13th year at the helm of the Gardner-Webb women's soccer program.

Megan Reimer leads the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively with three goals, six points, 30 shots and 12 attempts on-net. Dawn Rollyson has dished out a team-best two assists. Goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne has appeared in 10 games at goalie for Gardner-Webb and has allowed seven goals with 41 saves.

The Runnin' Bulldogs lead the all-time series 5-1 over Winthrop, with the Eagles lone win of the series coming during the 2008 season. Winthrop opened its Big South Conference season last year at Gardner-Webb, falling 2-0. The two teams have played every year, since the Eagle soccer program began, except for the 2007 season.

Saturday will also be Clover Soccer Club and Discoveries Soccer Club Night at Eagle Field. Each kid from the soccer clubs will receive a free Winthrop Women's Soccer poster as they enter the complex.
