Baylee Strachan Selected Big South Volleyball Freshman Of The Week (9-14-09)

Eagle Freshman Strachan Notches 24 Kills And A .385 Hitting Percentage To Earn Award

CHARLOTTE, NC – Winthrop's Baylee Strachan (pronounced Straw-un) has been selected the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Freshman of the Week in volleyball after helping to lead the Eagles to four wins and the championship of the 2009 Hilton Garden Inn Invitational.

Strachan, a middle hitter from Sioux City, Iowa, notched 24 kills, a .385 kill percentage, seven blocks and two digs over the weekend.  She got things going with seven kills, two aces, two digs and five blocks as Winthrop defeated Appalachian State, 3-2 on Sept 11.  She followed that performance with three kills, a .500 attack percentage and one block in the Eagles’ 3-0 win over Morgan State.  In the last match of the tournament, Strachan put down 14 kills, a .419 percentage at the net, two aces and one block to lead Winthrop to the 3-1 win over Butler. 

Also honored for last week's performances were UNC Asheville’s Lauren Flicker and Raquel Miotto for Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

Winthrop senior right side hitter Kelley Taylor was nominated for Player of the Week while sophomore outside hitter Kellie Sellers was nominated for Defensive Player of the Week.
