ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men’s tennis team lost 4-3 to USC Upstate Spartans Thursday at the Memorial Courts.
With the loss, the Eagles are now 3-5 (2-1) in the season, while the Spartans are 9-2.
Winthrop started 1-0 behind after losing two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, Daniel Daudt and Diego Toledo fell to Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi 8-5, while Sergey Belov and Luka Stanic lost 8-3 to Edgar Rodriguez and Jack Roux in the No. 3 doubles match. The only win for the Eagles came with Roy Sichel and Nadav Ruppin in the No. 2 doubles match as they beat Ramiro Blanco and Leandro Osorio 8-6.
Insingles play, Winthrop captured three matches. In the No. 1 singles match,Sichel beat Rodriguez 7-5, 6-4, while Belov defeated Airaldi 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles match. In the No. 3 singles match, Ruppin beat Tori 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. The clincher came in the No. 6 singles match as Andrea Merg lost in three sets 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 to Osorio.
“USC Upstate played well,” said head coach Cid Carvalho. “We had a chance in doubles but ended up losing.”
The Eagles will now play Liberty Flames for a conference match at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Memorial Courts.
