CONWAY
, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer finished its regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 defeat to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at the CCU Soccer Field.

The Lady Eagles fall to 5-10-3 on the season and 2-5-2 in conference play, while the Chanticleers improve to 7-11-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference.

“Playing Coastal today was a game that several of our players chose not to show up for,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “The reason for it, I don't know. We had some players that came off the bench and did very, very well. They did well today and had some chances, and I'm proud of their efforts.”

The first half ended scoreless as Coastal Carolina outshot Winthrop 11-5, while both teams took three shots on goal each. The Chanticleers also attempted nine corner kicks in the first stanza.

The Lady Eagles best offensive opportunity came in the 32nd minute on Lia Gordon's shot from the far side of the 18-yard box. She put her shot to the far post, but Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Amy Haggard made a diving save to her right.

Jessica Hausfeld, Katie Perkinson, Lia Gordon, Tiana Tallant and Kyrie Weant all had one shot each for Winthrop, while Hausfeld, Perkinson and Gordon had the three shots on target. Goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil snagged three saves for the half.

Anna Tupy had five shots for the Chanticleers and Sarah McPartland added four shots. Tupy had all three shots on goal. Haggard also had three saves in the first half.

Gordon had another opportunity in the 67th minute after receiving a pass at the top of the 18 yard box, but the shot went right at Haggard, who made the save.

Coastal Carolina had a chance in the 79th minute when Dana Gentile made a pass from inside the goal box back to Sara Niles, whose shot was blocked in front of the net by Stevie Lucas and jumped on by Weavil.

The Chanticleers took a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute on a header by Tupy off the corner kick from the near side by Niles. Coastal Carolina got the corner kick after a crossing pass was headed out of bounds by Lucas.

The Lady Eagles made a late attempt to tie the game in the 85th minute on Tallant's shot from 20 yards out, but her shot sailed high of the goal.

“At this point, we have to move past this,” Heinz added. “Our regular season is over and we are moving into the third season, which is the conference tournament. We can win the conference tournament, but not if we show up like we did today. We're talented and skilled enough, and we're capable of winning games in the tournament.”

Gordon and Weant had a team-high two shots each for Winthrop, while Gordon led in shots on goal with two. Weavil finished the match with four saves.

Tupy took a team-best seven shots for the Chanticleers and also had four shots on target. Haggard also had four saves in the contest.

The Lady Eagles will return to action next week as they travel to Charleston, SC for the 2009 Big South Conference Tournament starting on Thursday, Nov. 5.
