Winthrop's Women Finish 9th; Men Are 8th At Charlotte Cross Country Invitational (10-2-09)

Phillips, Spencer And Freudenthal Run Personal Bests In Charlotte

 
  • CHARLOTTE, NC-- The Winthrop wmen's cross country team placed ninth out of 23 schools while the men's squad finished eighth out of 21 teams in the Charlotte Invitational Cross Country meet on Friday.

    The women's squad was led by seniors Carey Phillips and Brooke Spencer who finished 17th and 19th, respectively, in the 5K event.  Both runners turned in career bests as Phillips ran a 18:16.6 race and Spencer covered the distance in 18:21.9.  Clemson's Kim Ruck took individual honors with a time of 17:02.4.

    Junior Carly Moss finished 46th with a time of 19:04.5 while freshman Jennifer Schofield claimed 81st place with a time of 19:46.6.  In 94th position was sophomore Tori Koterba with a time of 20:32.2.  Senior Lisa Sickman followed in 115th place as she ran a time of 20:24.4.  Freshman Heidi Dean finished 165th with a time of 22:00.8.

    The men's team, which was short-handed with only five runners entered, was led by sophomore Adam Freudenthal who ran the 8K race with a personal best time of 25:19.6 to place 10th in the individual competition.  Charlotte, which claimed both the men's and women's team titles, produced the top finisher for the men as Adu Dentamo was clocked at 24:17.3.  Former Winthrop standout Matt Elliott, who was running unattached tied for second place with a time of 24:38.4.

    Freshman A.J. Fitzsimmons finished 43rd with a time of 26:28.7 while sophomore Kyle Carufe turned in a time of 26:38.5 to claimed 50th place.  Freshman Ted Nisbett finished 61st with a time of 26:51.7 while freshman Jim Koterba closed out Winthrop's runners with a time of 30:34.5 to finish in 157th position.

  • "I was very pleased with the performances of both our men and women," said Winthrop head coach Ben Paxton.  "Adam (Freudenthal) turned in his best collegiate time as did Carey Phillips and Brooke Spencer.  Both teams finished ahead of the other four Big South schools entered in both the men's and women's events, so I was very proud of that accomplishment as it bodes well for the conference championship meet."
