ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men’s soccer team pulled off a 1-0 victory at the College of Charleston Tuesday evening, extending its streak to 20 straight games of scoring at least one goal.
The 20-game streak is tops in the country at the NCAA Division I level. Winthrop was tied with Bucknell heading into Tuesday’s action, but the Bison were idle and the Eagles now have the longest streak. Sitting in third place with 16 straight games with a goal are the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and San Diego. The streak dates back to Oct. 25, 2008 when the Eagles traveled to Asheville, NC and came away with a 1-0 loss to UNC Asheville.
Since that loss, Winthrop as a team has averaged 2.55 goals per game and has a record of 13-4-3 during that stretch. The Eagles are currently second in the nation in scoring with 2.58 goals per game.
Winthrop will put its streak on the line this Saturday, Oct. 24 when UNC Asheville comes to town for a Big South Conference match-up. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. as Winthrop looks to remain unbeaten in league play (3-0-2).
