LEXINGTON
, VA – The Winthrop women's soccer team fell to the VMI Keydets 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field, in Big South Conference action.

The Lady Eagles record falls to 3-9-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference, while the Keydets improve to 5-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

Kacey Hall gave VMI a quick 1-0 lead in the first minute of the contest with her goal from 10-yards out on the left side of the field. Christelle Ndongo crossed the ball across the field to Chrissy Beach, who then headed the ball over to Hall for the shot.

“We didn't show up to play in the first five minutes and gave up that goal,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “After that goal we played very well, but it was too late. Not having that strong start hurt us today. We can't give up easy goals. Our mistakes are costing us.”

Winthrop had its best chance of the second half with six minutes left when the Lady Eagles received a free kick just outside the 18-yard box after a foul by Alexi Staton. Stevie Lucas took the free kick, but put it high of the net.

The Keydets held a 17-15 advantage in shots and 7-5 in shots on-goal. They also led 3-2 in corner kicks.

Jessica Hausfeld led Winthrop with a total of four shots, while Tricia Vensel added three shots. Allie VandeWater had two shots, and six different players took one shot each. Weavil finished the contest with six saves.

Ndongo took a team-best four shots for the Keydets, and Chrissy Beach, Sarah Strand and Amanda Berrios had three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Angela Redmond snagged five saves against the Lady Eagles.

Winthrop will return home this weekend to face the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
