ANNAPOLIS, MD –
The Winthrop women's soccer team was shutout 2-0 by the Delaware Blue Hens Sunday afternoon on the final day of action at the 2008 Navy Soccer Invitational held at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

The Eagles record falls to 2-2 with the loss, while the Blue Hens improved to 2-2 with the victory.

The Blue Hens scored first against Winthrop in the 3rd minute of play when Amy Pickard scored her first goal of the season when she took the rebound from a Delaware shot and placed it into the open net for the early lead.

Pickard would strike again in the 63rd minute after she attacked the Winthrop defense unassisted and took a shot from 25 yards out and snuck it past goalie Dimi Poulos inside the right post.

“We had a few players who played okay, and some who did not. I am disappointed in that,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “We did not come ready to play today against a great team. When you play good teams you have to play big.”

The Winthrop offense was held stagnant all afternoon as they managed to take only four shots, while the Blue Hens took a total 19 shots.

Christine Isabella, Chelsea White, Kathleen Pollard, and Chelsea Tidwell had one shot apiece for the Eagles on the afternoon.

Despite giving up two Delaware goals in the match, Poulos had a solid afternoon in the net racking up ten saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 as they will take on USC Upstate at 7:30 p.m. on day one of the USC Upstate Invitational.
