ROCK HILL
, SC – Ann Lutzenkirchen scored with ten seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Winthrop the 2-1 victory against Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The Eagles improved to 4-4 with the victory, while Austin Peay dropped to 2-7 with the loss.

Erin Foote gave Winthrop an early 1-0 lead when she scored her first goal of the season in the 3rd minute. Foote received a lob pass in the box from Jessica Hausfeld, and placed it perfectly over the head of goalie Carley Newman for the goal.

The Lady Govs would tie the game in the 39th minute courtesy of Rian Barger who took a shot from inside the box and past goalie Dimi Poulos. Barger scored after the previous shot was deflected by Poulos and the ball landed at the feet of Barger for the shot.

Ashley Beck appeared to put Austin Peay ahead in the 61st minute after scored on a one-on-one, but was ruled offside and the goal was taken away.

The second half ended in a 1-1 tie forcing the first overtime, but neither team could manage a goal.

It appeared as the goal would end in a tie until the very end of the 110th minute when Lutzenkirchen scored her second goal of the season to give the Eagles the victory. Lutzenkirchen received a cross in the box from Rachel Webster, and promptly placed it in the top left corner of the goal.

“To finish the non-conference portion of the schedule with a win is very good,' said head coach Melissa Heinz. “We played well in part of the game, did not play well in the other half. We found a way to win, and that was important for us.”

The Winthrop offense took a total of 22 shots on the afternoon, while the Lady Govs took 11 shots.

Poulos had another solid afternoon in the net for the Eagles as she snagged a total of seven saves. Newman also added 11 saves for Austin Peay.

Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., when it hosts UNC Asheville in their Big South Conference opener.
