ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop junior Carey Phillips had a ninth place finish to lead the Lady Eagle women's cross country team to a fourth place finish while sophomore Casey Lyons led the men's squad to a fifth place finish at the nine-school Bojangles Invitational hosted by Charlotte on Saturday morning.
Phillips (Chesnee, SC) covered the 5K course in a time of 20:09 for her first top 10 finish of the season. The Lady Eagles totaled 130 points while the host Charlotte women took the team title with 18 points and produced the individual winner in Amanda Goestschius with a time of 18:56.5. Lyons (Kent Island, MD) finished 15th with a clocking of 27:04.3 as Winthrop totaled 137 points. Charlotte also claimed the men's team title with 45 points.East Tennessee State's Kenneth Rotich captured the individual title in a time of 25:22.8.
Sophomore Carly Moss (Florence, SC) finished among the top 20 runners in the women's race with a time of 20:27.2. Other results for the Winthrop women were: Tori Koterba (Fr., Rock Hill, SC), 32nd place, 22:24.7; Robin Smith (Fr., ), 34th, 22:30.8; Amy Rundio (Sr., Hernando, FL), 40th, 23:05.1; Sara Schultz (Fr., Holly, MI),45th, 23:29.8); Jennifer Schofield (Fr., Hatfield, PA), 49th, 23:53.7.
Finishing behind Lyons for Winthrop's men were freshman Johnathan Fazzary (Watkins Glen, NY) who had a time of 28:00.9 to claim 28th place. Right behind him was senior Ben Henderson (Brandon, FL) in 29th place at 28:02.4 and senior Gaines Bailey (Windmill, SC) in the 30th spot with a time of 28:21.5. Other runners for Winthrop included Adam Leroux (Fr., Uppertantallon, Nova Scotia), 35th, 28:45.5, and Dustin Ubbing (Fr., Towell, OH), 41st, 30:13.4.
Winthrop will be in action at home next Saturday (Sept. 20) when it hosts the annual Asics Winthrop Invitational at the Winthrop Farm.
