SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team shutout the USC Upstate Spartans 1-0 on Friday night during day one of the Carolinas Border Classic at County University Soccer Stadium.
Tonight was the first ever meeting between Winthrop (3-2) and USC Upstate (1-3).
The game proved to be a defensive battle through the first 86 minutes of play, but the Eagles pulled out another exciting victory courtesy of freshman Chelsea Tidwell.
Tidwell put Winthrop ahead of the Spartans in the 87th minute of action when she took the ball in the middle-third of the USC Upstate side of the field, took a few dribbles, and placed the ball in the top left corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
The Spartans tried a quick comeback after the Tidwell goal when Caitlin Robinson attempted to tie the game in the 88th minute, but Dimi Poulos denied her that opportunity to secure the win for the Eagles.
“Our backs and keeper played phenomenal tonight,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “Chelsea Tidwell came up big again tonight, that is the second time she has done that this season.”
Poulos racked up all five of her saves in the second half for her second shutout of the season.
The Winthrop offense took a total of 14 shots on the evening, five in the first half and nine in the second half, while USC Upstate took 11 shots.
“It was good to get the win tonight,” said Heinz. “We have to get better though to play championship caliber soccer for the remainder of the season.”
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday Sept. 14 as it will play Elon at 2 p.m. on the final day of the Carolinas Border Classic.
