Women’s Tennis Sweeps High Point In Semifinals Of 2008 Big South Women’s Tennis Tournament (4-18-08)

Lady Eagles Advanced To Tournament Championship Match

ROCK HILL, SC – The first seeded Winthrop Lady Eagles defeated No. 5 seed High Point, 4-0 on day two of the 2008 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship to advance to the Championship match.

 

With the win, Winthrop improves to 12-11 overall and the Panthers ended their season at 7-12.

 

The Lady Eagles earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 flight and the No. 3 flight. Elizaveta Zaytseva and Patricia Coimbra of Winthrop earned the first doubles win of the day, defeating Kelly Tolman and Caroline Mount, 8-1 in the No. 1. Their win was followed by a win at No. 3, with Larisa Bekmetova and Lisa Wilkinson downing Becky Carr and Jody Wicks, 8-3.

 

Winthrop secured the match victory with three wins in singles. At the No. 1 flight Zaytseva defeated High Point’s Audrey Lepottier, 6-2, 6-3, while Coimbra earned a win at No. 2 by topping Tolman, 6-2, 6-2. Closing out the match was Wilkinson, who triumphed over Carr, 6-2, 6-2. 

 

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Apr. 19 as they take on Coastal Carolina/Liberty at 9 a.m. in the championship match of the 2008 Big South Women’s Tennis Tournament at The Winthrop Memorial Courts.

No. 3 – Sara Abutovic (WU) vs. Caroline Mount (HPU) 6-4, 3-4 unfinished

No. 4 – Lisa Wilkinson (WU) def. Becky Carr (HPU) 6-2, 6-2

No. 5 – Larisa Bekmetova (WU) vs. Iris Schabetsberger (HPU) 3-6, 1-2 unfinished

No. 6 – Paula Pereira (WU) vs. Jody Wicks (HPU) 6-2, 2-4 unfinished
