Women's Tennis Completes Play For 2008 Fall Season (11-19-08)

Eagles Will Open Up 2009 Season At Davidson

ROCK HILL, SC The Winthrop women’s tennis team recently completed competition for their fall season on Nov. 9 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, NC.

 

The women began the month of October by traveling to New York City to participate in the USTA NTC Women’s College Invitational.

 

In the Singles “I” bracket, Elizaveta Zaytseva started her day off by defeating Natalia Sanchez of Cornell 6-4, 6-1, but would then drop her quarterfinal round match to the #1 seed Morgan Frank of Texas A&M in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. Zaytseva would then fall to Christina Tan of Syracuse in the Singles “I” Consolation quarterfinal matchup.

 

Patricia Coimbra competed in the Singles “II” bracket and started off by defeating the #3 seed Dasha Cherkasov of Boston College in three sets 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-0, and would fall in the quarterfinal match against Laura Peterzan of Harvard 7-6(2), 7-5. Coimbra would respond in the consolation quarterfinal match by defeating Simone Kalhorn of Syracuse in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

 

In the Singles “III” bracket, Sara Abutovic dropped her first match to the #3 seed Lindsay Clark of Yale 6-1, 6-2, and would rebound to beat Ryan Reichel of Dartmouth 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation quarterfinal matchup. She would then fall in the semifinal match to Alexa Ely of Pennsylvania 6-0, 6-1.

 

Lisa Wilkinson participated for the Eagles in the Singles “V” bracket and would be defeated in her first round match to Julia Flanzer of Brown 6-3, 6-1, and then again in the consolation bracket to Sydney Murray of Columbia 6-4, 6-4. Wilkinson would the defeat Allison Haynes of Syracuse in the second consolation bracket semi-final match 6-1, 7-5.

 

The Singles “VI” bracket saw Sandra Herrera fall in her first round match against Vicky Brook of Yale 6-2, 6-3. She would then defeat Tanja Vucetic of Brown in the consolation first round in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, and Nina Suda in the consolation quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-1.

 

Paula Pereira took part in the Singles “VII” bracket and would drop her first round match to Daniela DePauli of Pennsylvania 6-3, 7-5, and again in the consolation first round to Ksenia Chernyshova of Farleigh Dickinson by default.

 

In doubles action, Coimbra and Zaytseva dropped their Doubles “I” first round match to Frank and Stephanie Davidson of Texas A&M 8-6, and would fall again in their consolation match in the first round 8-6 to Joanna Craven and Michelle Sammons of Purdue. They would also be defeated by Shelley Carpeni and Molly Scott of Dartmouth in the second consolation bracket semifinal match 8-5.

 

Abutovic and Wilkinson teamed up to take part in the Doubles “II” bracket, but would be defeated in their first round match against Katarina Gajic and Alina Sullivan of Boston College 8-1, and would also lose their first round match of the consolation bracket to Leonora Slatnick and Amy Zhang of Rutgers in a hard-fought match 9-7.

 

In the Doubles “III” bracket, Herrera and Pereira dropped their first round match to Jennifer Barnes and Alexis Dorr of Iowa 8-5, and then again to Emily Ellis and Kathrin Sorokko of Brown by default.

 

Winthrop would then travel down to Savannah, GA for The Landings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

 

Herrera would fall in her first round match to Martina Beckmann of Armstrong Atlantic State 6-2, 6-1, but would respond to defeat Lauren Holton of North Florida 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation round. She would then win her semifinal match against Kristi Kegerreis of Georgia Southern 6-3, 6-1, and then clinch the consolation bracket title by defeating Barbara Maciocha of Idaho in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

 

Wilkinson would be victorious in her first round match against Amanda Mankovits of Eastern Washington in three sets 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, but would fall in her quarterfinal match against Gabriella Kovacs of Armstrong Atlantic State 6-2, 6-1.

 

Wilkinson and Herrera would team up for doubles competition against Christine Caforio and Melanie Rolle of Georgia Southern. They would be defeated 8-5. The duo would respond to capture the consolation bracket by reeling off two straight matches starting with an 8-1 victory over Holton and Aline Berkenbrock of North Florida 8-1 in the semifinals and an 8-2 win over Mankovits and Marie Demerath of Eastern Washington to win the title.

 

The Eagles hit the road against on Oct. 22 for the ITA Regionals held at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC.

 

In the prequalifying round, Wilkinson was defeated by Amelia Harris of Louisville in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

 

Coimbra and Abutovic both dropped their first round match in the qualifying round. Abutovic fell to Tara Bryne of East Tennessee State 6-1, 6-1, and Coimbra dropped her match to Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee 6-2, 6-0. 

 

Zaytseva also was defeated in her match in the round of 64 to Ella Nze of Duke 6-4, 6-0.

 

Coimbra and Zaytseva then teamed up for their doubles match against Jennifer Stone and Caroline Lilley of Kentucky, but were defeated 8-5.

 

Winthrop then concluded their fall season by competing in the Kitty Harrison Invitational in singles and doubles competition against North Carolina State, Maryland, Marshall, Furman, UNC Greensboro, and College of Charleston.

 

In doubles action against North Carolina State, the Eagles were victorious in one of the three matches. Coimbra and Zaytseva defeated Lenka Hojckova and Diana Mortlock 8-4. Herrera and Wilkinson fell to Neils Barringer and Kristen Bleakley 8-5, and Abutovic and Pereira were defeated by Berk Brock and Pender Sessoms 9-7.

 

Coimbra and Zaytseva also gave Winthrop their lone doubles victory against Marshall as the duo beat Jessica Keener and Deanna Bailey 8-4. Herrera and Wilkinson dropped their match against Kristina Koprcina and Catherine Kellner 9-7, while Pereira and Abutovic fell to Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich 8-6.

 

The final doubles match came against Maryland, and the Eagles again took one out of the three matches against the Terps. Pereira and Abutovic defeated Lauren Wolman and Karin Lundmark 8-5. Coimbra and Zaytseva were defeated against Michal Amirt and Lisa Miller 8-3, while Herrera and Wilkinson dropped their match against Eleanor Peters and Jordan Hansbrough 8-2.

 

The first singles match came against the Thundering Herd, which saw Winthrop come away victorious in two of the six matches. Zaytseva defeated Karlina Sour in three sets 6-1, 4-6, and 10-7, and Herrera won her match against Raich also in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 11-9. Coimbra fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to Bailey, Abutovic dropped her match in three sets 7-6, 3-6, 10-4 to Keener, Wilkinson was defeated in straight sets by Kellner 6-1, 6-3, and Pereira lost against Koprcina 6-3, 6-0.

 

The Eagles then split their six matches against the Paladins. Abutovic won her match against Lauren Tomory 6-3, 6-1, Herrera defeated Susan Bitetti 6-3, 6-3, and Pereira won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 against Brooke Mosteller 6-4, 6-1. Zaytseva fell in her match to Monica Arguello 6-2, 6-0, Coimbra was defeated by Jessica Preeg 6-1, 6-1, and Wilkinson dropped her match against Jennifer Betts 6-1, 6-4.

 

Winthrop then took on the Spartans, and came away victorious in four out of the six matches. Coimbra defeated Arielle Von Strolley in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, Herrera won her match against Courtney Akel 6-0, Wilkinson beat Jessica Eblen 6-4, 6-2, and Pereira won against Taylor Mattox 6-0, 6-0. Zaytseva fell to Alejandra Guerra in three sets 6-0, 6-7, 5-10, and Abutovic was defeated by Lucy Dougherty 6-3, 6-3.

 

The Eagles wrapped up play at Kitty Harrison by taking four out of five matches against the Cougars. Zaytseva defeated Holly Dowse in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(4), Coimbra beat Laura Borza 6-3, 6-0, Abutovic won her match against Caroline Newman 6-1, 6-2, and Herrera won in straight sets against Kinsey Casey 6-3, 6-2. Wilkinson fell in her match against Keely Mulligan 6-2, 6-3.

 

Winthrop will begins its 2009 season on Jan. 21 by traveling to take on Davidson at 3 p.m.
