HIGH POINT, NC – The Winthrop women's soccer team fell 2-0 on the road to the High Point Panthers on Saturday evening at Vert Soccer Stadium, in Big South Conference action.

The Eagles record drops to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while High Point improved to 6-2-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Panthers struck quickly in the 1st minute when Renee Hitchcock took a pass on the left wing from teammate Taylor Ray. Hitchcock cut inside of the Winthrop defense and chipped her shot over goalie Dimi Poulos for the 1-0 lead.

High Point would add their final goal in the 67th minute courtesy of a penalty kick by Laura Eldridge. Ashley Holleran was awarded the penalty kick after receiving a pass in the goal box and was tackled from behind by a Winthrop defender. Eldridge was then selected to take the penalty kick.

The Winthrop offense was held quiet the entire match managing only five shots and no attempts on goal, while High point took a total of 15 shots with seven of them being on target. Rachel Webster, Courtney Durbin, Erin Foote, Kathleen Pollard, and Chelsea White all had one shot apiece against the Panthers. Poulos would end up grabbing five saves on the evening.

“We played hard tonight, but we just did not have any luck,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “Not having a little luck hurt us in this game. Our kids kept fighting though, but we just could not capitalize. We will not let this keep us down though.”

The Eagles will travel to Florence, SC for a non-conference match against Francis Marion on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
