ORANGEBURG, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team defeated South Carolina State 3-0 in their final non-conference game of the season, Thursday evening at Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium.
The Eagles record improves to 8-8-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-9-2.
Chelsea Tidwell would put Winthrop up 1-0 in the 38th minute with her team-leading fourth goal. Tidwell gained possession of the ball on the South Carolina State side of the field, took a few dribbles, and passed it to Nichole Smith. Smith immediately made a through pass back to Tidwell who then took her shot from 18-yards out and past Alechia Brothers who was charging towards the ball.
The Eagles offense dominated the first half taking eight total shots with seven attempts-on-goal, while the defense held the Bulldogs to just one shot.
Winthrop went up 2-0 in the 56th minute when Erin Foote scored her third goal of the season. Tidwell started the play after her initial shot was deflected by Brothers, who then bobbled the ball, and Tidwell took the ball from her. Tidwell would then pass the ball between the legs of Brothers to Foote who placed the ball into the open net.
Kathleen Pollard scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute on a free kick from 20-yards out to put the Eagles in front 3-0. Pollard received the free kick after she was fouled by a South Carolina State defender. Pollard set the ball up at the 20 and blasted her shot over the Bulldog wall and into the top left corner of the net.
Winthrop finished the game with 15 total shots and 12 shots-on-goal. South Carolina State finished with eight total shots and three attempts-on-net.
Pollard, Jessica Hausfeld, and Kristen Lee led the Eagles with two shots apiece. Dimi Poulos started the game for the Eagles, but was replaced by Kelsy Weavil in the second half. Weavil finished with three saves.
Janine Francois led the Bulldogs with three shots, while Brothers had a total of nine saves.
“It was great to get the win tonight,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “It is great to stay unbeaten because it shows our consistency. I am really looking forward to our last two conference games of the season at home.”
Winthrop will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 at it hosts Liberty on Senior Day at 7 p.m. in conference action.
